To add scheduled in-store pickup to Shopify, layer a pickup-scheduling app like OrderRules on top of Shopify's native local pickup: customers choose a **pickup date and time slot** at each location, you cap how many pickups land in a slot, and your pickup hours and cutoff are enforced at checkout — **no code**, on any Shopify plan. Shopify's built-in local pickup offers the *option* but not the *schedule*, which is the gap this guide closes.

## Does Shopify have in-store pickup built in?

Yes — [Shopify's native local pickup](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/delivery-methods/local-pickup) lets you offer "collect at store" per location, and eligible customers see a pickup option at checkout at no extra cost. But it's deliberately basic: **customers can't choose a pickup date or time slot, there's no cap on how many pickups land in one window, and there's no pickup cutoff or hours enforcement.** For a bakery or a butcher taking twenty pickups an hour at peak, that's the difference between a smooth Saturday and a queue out the door.

So the native option answers "*can* I pick up here?" but not "*when*, and *is that slot still open?*" — which is exactly what a scheduling layer adds. OrderRules keeps the native pickup experience at checkout and adds the date picker, slots, capacity, hours, and cutoffs around it.

## Why scheduled pickup is worth setting up

Click-and-collect is no longer a nice-to-have. The pain is always capacity. Pickup shifts fulfillment to a specific place and moment, and without limits every customer aims for the same Friday-evening or Saturday-morning window. Scheduling with per-slot caps spreads that demand across the day so your counter is never slammed — and never idle.

## How to add scheduled in-store pickup on Shopify

Set pickup availability with the same rules engine OrderRules uses for delivery — you just choose the **pickup** fulfillment method. Here's the flow:

### Step 1 — Install OrderRules and open the Advanced plan

Install [OrderRules](/pricing) and upgrade to **Advanced** from **Settings → Plan**. Scheduled pickup is an Advanced feature, with a **14-day free trial** and no Shopify Plus requirement.

### Step 2 — Turn on Shopify's native local pickup

In **Settings → Shipping and delivery → Local pickup**, enable pickup at each location you want to offer. OrderRules rides this native method, so pickup stays familiar for customers and orders keep Shopify's built-in pickup fulfillment status.

### Step 3 — Create a pickup availability rule

In OrderRules, add an [availability rule](/docs/delivery/availability-rules) and set its fulfillment method to **Pickup** — or **Both**, if a product can be either picked up or delivered. [Scope the rule](/docs/delivery/scoping-rules) to all products or narrow it by product, collection, tag, or location.

### Step 4 — Set per-location hours, lead time and cutoff

Give each pickup location its own **hours, lead time, order cutoff, and booking horizon**. Lead time stops same-minute bookings you can't prepare for; the cutoff powers "order by 2 PM for same-day pickup."

### Step 5 — Add pickup time slots and capacity caps

### Step 6 — Add blackout dates and test at checkout

Block days you can't offer pickup, or one-click import your Shopify store holidays. Then place a test order: the Shopify Function should block an invalid or full slot, and the order should be **tagged by pickup date and location** so you can build a daily prep list from Shopify order search.

## In-store pickup across multiple locations

Each pickup point maps to a **Shopify Location**, so an order placed for the downtown store routes to the downtown store — not your warehouse. Because every location carries its own hours, capacity, cutoff, and blackouts, you can run a high-volume flagship and a quiet neighborhood branch on completely different pickup schedules from one app. Orders auto-tag by pickup date, so each location's staff can filter Shopify orders to just today's pickups and stage them in order.

## In-store pickup vs local delivery — which (or both)?

**In-store pickup** = the customer comes to one of your locations. **Local delivery** = you bring the order to them within a delivery area. They're separate fulfillment methods: pickup needs locations, hours, and slots; local delivery needs zones, a delivery minimum, and (usually) a route. OrderRules schedules and caps **both**, and a single availability rule can offer pickup, delivery, or both on the same product.

Two honest boundaries worth knowing.
