Shopify In-Store & Local Pickup: How to Add Scheduled Pickup (Dates, Slots & Capacity)

To add scheduled in-store pickup to Shopify, layer a pickup-scheduling app like OrderRules on top of Shopify's native local pickup: customers choose a pickup date and time slot at each location, you cap how many pickups land in a slot, and your pickup hours and cutoff are enforced at checkout — no code, on any Shopify plan. Shopify's built-in local pickup offers the option but not the schedule, which is the gap this guide closes.

This is the pickup scheduling + capacity layer — not a POS or a fulfillment app. OrderRules decides when and how many pickups you accept and tags each order by pickup date. Your team still picks, packs, and hands over the order, and payments/POS stay with Shopify. For local delivery routing and dispatch, pair a routing app — see the in-store pickup vs local delivery section below.

Does Shopify have in-store pickup built in?

Yes — Shopify's native local pickup lets you offer "collect at store" per location, and eligible customers see a pickup option at checkout at no extra cost. But it's deliberately basic: customers can't choose a pickup date or time slot, there's no cap on how many pickups land in one window, and there's no pickup cutoff or hours enforcement. For a bakery or a butcher taking twenty pickups an hour at peak, that's the difference between a smooth Saturday and a queue out the door.

So the native option answers "can I pick up here?" but not "when, and is that slot still open?" — which is exactly what a scheduling layer adds. OrderRules keeps the native pickup experience at checkout and adds the date picker, slots, capacity, hours, and cutoffs around it.

Why scheduled pickup is worth setting up

Click-and-collect is no longer a nice-to-have. Buy-online-pick-up-in-store made up 9.9% of all e-commerce in 2024 and 17.5% during the holiday season, and click-and-collect sales are projected to grow 13.6% a year — roughly 101% faster than e-commerce overall, according to Capital One Shopping research. Grocery dominates it — about 78.7% of click-and-collect sales are groceries — which is why food, convenience, and specialty-perishable stores feel the scheduling pain first.

The pain is always capacity. Pickup shifts fulfillment to a specific place and moment, and without limits every customer aims for the same Friday-evening or Saturday-morning window. Scheduling with per-slot caps spreads that demand across the day so your counter is never slammed — and never idle.

How to add scheduled in-store pickup on Shopify

Set pickup availability with the same rules engine OrderRules uses for delivery — you just choose the pickup fulfillment method. Here's the flow:

Step 1 — Install OrderRules and open the Advanced plan

Install OrderRules and upgrade to Advanced from Settings → Plan. Scheduled pickup is an Advanced feature, with a 14-day free trial and no Shopify Plus requirement.

Step 2 — Turn on Shopify's native local pickup

In Settings → Shipping and delivery → Local pickup, enable pickup at each location you want to offer. OrderRules rides this native method, so pickup stays familiar for customers and orders keep Shopify's built-in pickup fulfillment status.

Step 3 — Create a pickup availability rule

In OrderRules, add an availability rule and set its fulfillment method to Pickup — or Both, if a product can be either picked up or delivered. Scope the rule to all products or narrow it by product, collection, tag, or location.

Step 4 — Set per-location hours, lead time and cutoff

Give each pickup location its own hours, lead time, order cutoff, and booking horizon. Lead time stops same-minute bookings you can't prepare for; the cutoff powers "order by 2 PM for same-day pickup."

Step 5 — Add pickup time slots and capacity caps

Add pickup windows (e.g. 10:00–12:00) and cap each date and slot so full windows grey out. This is the core of the whole setup — see offering delivery and pickup time slots for how slots behave.

Step 6 — Add blackout dates and test at checkout

Block days you can't offer pickup, or one-click import your Shopify store holidays. Then place a test order: the Shopify Function should block an invalid or full slot, and the order should be tagged by pickup date and location so you can build a daily prep list from Shopify order search.

In-store pickup across multiple locations

Each pickup point maps to a Shopify Location, so an order placed for the downtown store routes to the downtown store — not your warehouse. Because every location carries its own hours, capacity, cutoff, and blackouts, you can run a high-volume flagship and a quiet neighborhood branch on completely different pickup schedules from one app. Orders auto-tag by pickup date, so each location's staff can filter Shopify orders to just today's pickups and stage them in order.

In-store pickup vs local delivery — which (or both)?

In-store pickup = the customer comes to one of your locations. Local delivery = you bring the order to them within a delivery area. They're separate fulfillment methods: pickup needs locations, hours, and slots; local delivery needs zones, a delivery minimum, and (usually) a route. OrderRules schedules and caps both, and a single availability rule can offer pickup, delivery, or both on the same product.

Two honest boundaries worth knowing. Shopify's own native local delivery only works with Shop Pay — not Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, or PayPal — so enforcing delivery rules across every wallet is one reason to use a checkout Function instead; that's covered in the food-store local delivery guide. And OrderRules schedules delivery windows and caps capacity, but it is not a driver-dispatch or route-optimization tool — pair one (EasyRoutes, Zapiet Eats) if you run your own drivers.

What OrderRules does and doesn't do for pickup

To keep expectations honest: OrderRules is the scheduling, capacity, and rules layer that rides Shopify's native local pickup. It does:

  • Add a pickup date and time-slot picker to product and cart pages.
  • Enforce hours, lead time, cutoff, per-slot capacity, and blackouts at checkout via Shopify Functions.
  • Route orders to the right Shopify Location and tag them by pickup date.

It does not replace your POS or checkout (pickup rides Shopify's native flow), execute the pick-pack/handover, manage inventory or curbside hardware, or dispatch delivery drivers. Think of it as the layer that controls when and how many pickups you accept — your team and Shopify handle the rest. For the full picture of how it fits alongside store hours and order limits, see the in-store pickup feature overview and the best Shopify delivery date picker apps.

Turn on scheduled pickup

Shopify gives you the pickup option; scheduling gives you a pickup operation — dates and slots customers actually choose, capacity that protects your counter, and cutoffs that keep same-day promises real. It rides the native pickup your customers already recognize, enforces every rule at checkout so express wallets can't slip past, and works on any Shopify plan.

Frequently asked questions

Not with Shopify alone. Shopify's native local pickup lets you offer pickup at a location, but customers can't choose a pickup date or time slot — it's the single biggest gap in the native setup. Add a scheduling app like OrderRules and customers pick a specific pickup date and window at checkout, within the hours, lead time, and capacity you set for that location.

Yes. Shopify has native local pickup: you enable it per location in Settings → Shipping and delivery, and eligible customers see a pickup option at checkout. What it doesn't do is let customers schedule a pickup date/time, cap how many pickups land in a slot, or enforce pickup hours and cutoffs — those are what a pickup-scheduling app adds on top.

Turn on Shopify's native local pickup for each location, then install a scheduling app like OrderRules, create an availability rule with the fulfillment method set to Pickup, and add your hours, lead time, cutoff, time slots, and per-slot capacity. The picker appears on your product and cart pages, and a Shopify checkout Function enforces the chosen slot — no code, on any plan.

Yes. Each pickup point maps to a Shopify Location, and orders route to the right store automatically. Every location can have its own pickup hours, lead time, cutoff, booking horizon, capacity caps, and blackout dates, so a busy flagship and a small branch don't have to share one schedule.

Set a capacity cap on each pickup date and slot. You choose the maximum number of orders (or items) a window can take, and once it's full the slot greys out so no one else can book it. OrderRules enforces the cap at checkout with a Shopify Function, so a full Saturday-morning pickup window can't be overbooked through Shop Pay or an express checkout.

In-store pickup means the customer collects the order at one of your locations; local delivery means you bring it to them within a delivery area. They're different fulfillment methods with different rules — pickup needs locations, hours, and slots; delivery needs zones and minimums. OrderRules can schedule and cap both, and a single availability rule can enable pickup, delivery, or both.

No. Native local pickup and the OrderRules pickup scheduler both work on every Shopify plan. The picker lives on your product and cart pages as a theme app block, and the checkout enforcement runs on a Shopify Function — neither requires Shopify Plus.

Scheduled in-store and local pickup are part of the Advanced plan at $19.99/month, which also includes delivery dates, time slots, and capacity limits. There's a 14-day free trial, no Shopify Plus requirement, and everything enforces at checkout on any Shopify plan.
