Installing OrderRules
Install from the Shopify App Store
Getting OrderRules onto your store takes about two minutes. No coding or theme edits required.
Step 1: Open the OrderRules Listing
Go directly to OrderRules on the Shopify App Store β no search needed.
Step 2: Install the App
- Click Install
- Review the permissions OrderRules needs (orders, products, customers, themes and checkout validations)
- Confirm the install
Shopify handles all the technical setup behind the scenes.
Step 3: Launch OrderRules
After installation, OrderRules opens automatically inside your Shopify admin. You will see the onboarding guide, which walks you through first-time setup.
If you navigate away, you can always reopen OrderRules from Shopify Admin > Apps > OrderRules.
Enable the Theme Embed
This adds the store status banner to your storefront so customers can see whether you are open or closed.
- Click Open Theme Editor from the onboarding guide
- The theme editor opens with the OrderRules embed under App embeds
- Make sure it is switched on
- Click Save
Confirm the Checkout Rule Is On
This is the most important step. Without it, your rules are visual only and can be bypassed.
OrderRules tries to turn its checkout rule on for you when you install. To confirm:
- Click Open Checkout Settings from the onboarding guide
- Scroll to the Checkout rules section
- Make sure the OrderRules rule is turned on
- Save if you changed anything
Back in OrderRules, you can click Mark as enabled on that step if the guide can't confirm it yet.
Enable OrderRules
OrderRules starts in setup mode, so you can set up your schedule, limits and messages without affecting your store. When you're ready, click Enable OrderRules on the dashboard. Until then, nothing is enforced.

The checkout rule is the one that matters most. Without it, an express checkout walks straight past every limit you set.
Verify Your Installation
Back on the OrderRules dashboard, confirm you see:
- Enable the theme app embed is done in the setup guide, and the Theme App Embed card shows Active
- Enable checkout validation rule is done
- No "OrderRules is in setup mode" banner, and your store status showing as OPEN or CLOSED

Requirements
- Any Shopify plan (Basic, Grow, Advanced, or Plus)
- A modern theme that supports app embeds (all Online Store 2.0 themes)
- No other checkout validation apps required
