Using OrderRules with Shopify Sidekick

5 min read

Ask Shopify Sidekick about your OrderRules setup in plain language and get instant answers — your order limits, store hours, and customer and product rules — without leaving the Shopify admin or opening a settings page.

What this is

Shopify Sidekick is the AI assistant built into your Shopify admin. With OrderRules installed, Sidekick can read your OrderRules configuration and answer questions about it. Think of it as asking a teammate "what are our rules right now?" — and getting the answer immediately.

Sidekick reports your rules; it does not change them. To edit a rule, open the OrderRules app (see the Making changes section below).

Before you start

You'll need:

  • OrderRules installed on your store.
  • Shopify Sidekick available in your admin. (Availability is managed by Shopify and varies by plan and region.)
  • At least some OrderRules configuration set up, so there's something to report. New to OrderRules? Set up your rules in the app first.

How to use it

  1. Open your Shopify admin.
  2. Open Sidekick (the assistant in your admin).
  3. Ask a question in plain language — for example, "What are my current order limits?"
  4. The first time, Sidekick will ask permission to access your OrderRules data. Choose Yes.
  5. Sidekick reads your live setup and answers in the chat.

That's it — no menus, no settings pages.

What you can ask

Sidekick can answer across everything OrderRules manages. Some examples:

Order capacity

  • "What are my current order limits?"
  • "How many orders can I still take today / this week / this month?"

You'll get your daily, weekly, and monthly caps, how many orders you've used, and how many remain.

Store hours & schedule

  • "When is my store open this week?"
  • "What time do we close on Friday?"
  • "Do I have any upcoming closures?"

You'll get your weekly schedule, timezone, and upcoming holiday or special-date closures.

Per-customer limits

  • "What are my per-customer purchase limits?"
  • "Do I have any 'one per customer' rules?"

You'll get your per-customer rules — by orders, quantity, or spend, and by period (day, week, month, year, or lifetime).

Product, collection & tag rules

  • "Which products have a minimum order or case-pack rule?"
  • "What rules apply to this product?"
  • "Do I have any collection limits?"

You'll get per-product and per-variant limits, minimum order quantities, step (multiples-of) quantities, and collection and tag limits.

Overview

  • "What rules do I have set up?"
  • "Show me my OrderRules settings."

You'll get a full overview of your active configuration in one answer.

Tips for best results

  • Be specific. "How many orders can I take today?" works better than a vague request.
  • Start a new chat for a fresh check. Sidekick may answer a follow-up from what it already pulled earlier in the same conversation. For an up-to-the-minute read of a specific area, ask in a new Sidekick chat.
  • For a single product, ask "What rules apply to this product?" and choose the product when prompted, or name it — Sidekick will scope the answer to it.
  • Mention OrderRules if Sidekick doesn't pick up the question (e.g., "In OrderRules, what are my customer limits?").

Privacy & security

  • You're in control. Sidekick asks your permission before reading OrderRules data.
  • Your store only. Sidekick can see only your own store's configuration.
  • Read-only. Sidekick reports your rules — it cannot change any setting, and it never sees customer personal information through these answers.

Making changes

Sidekick currently answers questions about your rules; it doesn't change them. To edit a rule, open the OrderRules app. The matching docs walk through each area:

  • Store hours & schedule — weekly schedule, multiple windows, and holiday closures.
  • Order limits — storewide daily, weekly, and monthly order caps and messages.
  • Product limits — per-product and per-variant limits, minimum order quantity, and step (multiples-of) quantity.
  • Customer rules — per-customer purchase limits.

Setting and editing rules directly from Sidekick is on our roadmap.

Troubleshooting

Sidekick says I have no OrderRules configuration. Your store may not have any rules set up yet. Open the OrderRules app and configure your schedule and limits first, then ask again.

Sidekick gave an old answer or didn't re-check. Within one conversation, Sidekick may reuse what it already pulled. Start a new Sidekick chat and ask again for a fresh read.

Sidekick didn't use OrderRules to answer. Rephrase closer to your rules, or mention OrderRules by name (e.g., "In OrderRules, when are we open?").

I don't see Sidekick in my admin. Sidekick availability is controlled by Shopify and depends on your plan and region. If you don't have it yet, this feature will work once Sidekick is available to your store.

Can Sidekick change my rules? Not yet — it's read-only today. Make changes in the OrderRules app, as described in the Making changes section above.
