Checkout protection

2 min read Β· Facts checked November 3, 2026

Your delivery rules are enforced at checkout by a Shopify checkout rule called "OrderRules delivery dates". It's what stops an order on a closed, blackout or fully booked day, or without a required date, whichever way the order was placed.

Check it's on

  1. Open OrderRules β†’ Delivery Dates β†’ Setup.
  2. Look under the Delivery dates switch:
    • "Checkout protection: On" (green): you're covered.
    • A banner, "Checkout isn't enforcing your delivery rules": checkout accepts orders that break your rules. Click Turn on checkout protection.
  3. If Shopify asks you to approve updated permissions, approve them and reload the page.

See it in Shopify

Shopify admin β†’ Settings β†’ Checkout β†’ Checkout rules. OrderRules' rules are listed there:

  • OrderRules delivery dates: delivery dates, time slots and capacity.
  • OrderRules limits: your order and customer limits.

Both should show Active. Turn on checkout protection only turns on OrderRules delivery dates. If OrderRules limits shows Inactive, your store hours and order, product and customer limits aren't checked at checkout: open its β‹― menu β†’ Activate rule.

If you added a rule by hand with Add rule, Shopify names it "Checkout rule for OrderRules …". If you see the same rule twice, delete one (β‹― β†’ Delete). They do the same job.

Turning it off

Settings β†’ Checkout β†’ Checkout rules β†’ turn the rule off. OrderRules never turns it back on by itself; the banner on the Delivery Dates page just reminds you.

When OrderRules is switched off

Nothing is enforced while the app is off, and the "On" badge is hidden.
